Experimental observations on turbulent boundary layers subjected to a step change in surface roughness

چکیده

Based on experimental data acquired with particle image velocimetry, we examine turbulent boundary layers that are subjected to an abrupt change in wall roughness the streamwise direction. Three different sandpapers (P24, P36 and P60) together a smooth used form number of surface transition cases, including both R $\rightarrow$ S (where upstream is rough second either or smoother compared surface) downstream surface; surfaces rough). This enables us investigate effect strength ( $M = \ln [y_{02}/y_{01}]$ , where $y_{01}$ $y_{02}$ lengths surfaces, respectively) growth internal layer (IBL) corresponding flow structure. The results show for each group (i.e. R), thickness IBLs proportional transition, thicker cases their counterparts similar $|M|$ when normalised by initial $\delta _0$ ). also rates could be represented power law, consistent previous studies. However, despite wide range scatter literature power-law exponent, average value $0.75$ (varies between $0.71$ $0.8$ no clear trend) obtained present study considering all cases. pre-factor fit, other hand, found related transition. In addition variations velocity defect diagnostic plots IBLs, sweep ejection events appear differ significantly (depending type step change). Two-point spatial correlations, moreover, structure more elongated wall-normal directions, as accelerates over cases). For reverse R, decelerates rougher surface), however, correlation coefficients shrink size directions.

Turbulent Mixing in Oceanic Surface and Benthic Boundary Layers

The objectives of the specific effort being reported are to improve the fundamental knowledge of turbulent mixing and diffusion processes occurring in oceanic boundary layers, with special emphases on the surface mixed layer and the wave-current boundary layer in coastal oceans. In the studies of surface mixed layers, the focus is on the penetration of a mixed layer (say, driven by the wind) in...

The effect of bed roughness on scalar fluctuations in turbulent boundary layers

The effect of bed roughness on an iso-kinetic chemical plume released into the logarithmic region of the bed boundary layer of an open channel flow is examined. The bed roughness is varied systematically to generate flows in the smooth (painted polyethylene sheets), transitional rough (2.5-mm and 11.5-mm gravel beds), and fully rough (21.0-mm gravel bed) regimes. Concentration fields are measur...

Instabilities in turbulent boundary layers

An investigation of a model of turbulence generation in the wall region of a turbulent boundary layer is made through direct numerical simulations. The model is based on the instability of a streak. First, a laminar boundary layer disturbed by a continuous blowing through a slot is simulated in order to reproduce and further investigate the results reported from the experiments of Acarlar & Smi...

Transitional-turbulent spots and turbulent-turbulent spots in boundary layers.

Two observations drawn from a thoroughly validated direct numerical simulation of the canonical spatially developing, zero-pressure gradient, smooth, flat-plate boundary layer are presented here. The first is that, for bypass transition in the narrow sense defined herein, we found that the transitional-turbulent spot inception mechanism is analogous to the secondary instability of boundary-laye...

Control of turbulent boundary layers

The objective of this paper is to give an overview of recent progress on boundary layer control made by the author’s research group at University of California, Los Angeles. A primary theme is to highlight the importance of a certain linear mechanism and its contribution to skin-friction drag in turbulent boundary layers—and the implication that significant drag reduction can be achieved by alt...
